Amy Tweddell, 27 is an RE teacher with a passion for beauty. When she became aware of our fast-track NVQ beauty courses she jumped at the chance to train in beauty, with the ultimate objective of becoming a beauty therapy tutor. Amy successfully completed NVQ 2 and immediately enrolled on Level 3!

Amy says: “I’ve not looked back since I started the beauty course with Saks Training at Darlington. It’s exactly what I’ve always dreamed of doing. And I’m so glad I decided to go straight from NVQ 2 to 3, it’s a smooth transition from one level to the next. I’m determined to forge a career combining my existing teaching skills and experience with my new qualifications.”

“Being from a small town on the north coast of Scotland I wanted a hairdressing career but my location limited my opportunities! A Saks-trained stylist said they offer an intensive complete hairdressing course at Glasgow so I could complete my training in seven months. As soon as I met the academy staff and had the tour I knew I wanted in, so I booked a place on their next intake and move my life to Glasgow.

“I loved every aspect of my training. Everyone is professional and great fun too; they made being away from home easy. I had decided to permanently relocate to Glasgow and look for a job in the city but everything changed after a careers presentation given in the academy by Steiner about working on their cruise ships. I applied and got an interview! And the Saks team was supportive, giving guidance about my CV and trade test. I was offered a position on one of the Steiner cruises and started in February 2014 - less than a year after starting my Saks training!”

Claire Turner, 24, from Blythe was unsure what she wanted to do after school and ended up working as an airport handler at Newcastle International Airport. Over the years Claire’s enjoyed getting creative with hair for friends and family. And she’s always been told she has a natural flair for hairdressing and should pursue it as a full-time career.

After browsing online for hair training opportunities Claire made the call to Saks in 2013. She booked her place on the next fast-track NVQ 2 Hairdressing course at Saks Training Darlington… and graduated in November 2013.

Claire says: “The thing that made me pick up the phone is that the Saks Training website clearly says that Saks offers lots of different fast-track course options. Having finally decided to get some hairdressing training, I was keen to get on with it quickly!

"I’ve LOVED being trained in a small group. I spent stacks of one-to-one time with my tutors and I think that level of two-way interaction is so important. That’s what gives Saks Training the edge for me. I really love cutting more than anything else. It gives me the chance to express creativity I didn’t know was there and I’m really into it now!”

Peta Deyell from Shetland always fancied a career in hair, having dabbled with hairdressing for years, but with no formal training. In December 2012 she took the plunge to get qualified, involving a seven month stint away from her family.

Peta says: “Being away from home was daunting! But it was so worth it as the content on the SVQ Beginners NVQ 2 Hairdressing course was excellent. The educators at Saks Training Glasgow are passionate and this shows in their delivery of this great course. I was encouraged to stretch my abilities to achieve a high standard and put my new knowledge to the test. I achieved a VTCT Certificate of Excellence in addition to my qualification. I could not have achieved this without the enthusiasm of the teaching staff in the Academy.

“I would encourage anyone interested in achieving a hairdressing qualification to do it with Saks. I feel like I have won the lottery, doing something I love every day and it proves you can follow your dreams whatever age you are if you put your mind to it!”

Serham Keys from Saffron Walden. After 10 weeks of intensive training in the world of barbering at Saks Training Academy in London, Serham passed his NVQ2 … with Distinction!

To start his apprenticeship Serham went back to Turkey for five months where the art of barbering is a family tradition. Serham says: “I totally enjoyed my Saks Training! It was exactly what I needed to become confident in all aspects of barbering. And I now look forward to an exciting career and welcome everyone to my barber chair for a sharp haircut and wet shave.”

Tom Berry, Saks Art Team

After my A Levels, I went straight into full time employment working in insurance. I spent 6 years doing this before realising it wasn’t really for me. I’m more of a people person and wanted to see the world. Hairdressing wasn’t something I had ever contemplated until a chance conversation with my sister's hairdresser who convinced me that it more of a hobby with a pay check than a job!

So I started my career in the wonderful world of hairdressing, working for free on a Saturday in a local salon followed by a move to Sydney, Australia where I worked as an assistant in a boutique salon next to the Opera House. It was here that I learned about the excitement of photo shoots and fashion shows, being involved in Australian Fashion Week and even doing the hair for a Lexus TV commercial. Knowing that good training was vital and that England has the best hairdressers in the world, I made the decision to return home to complete my training. When researching different companies, I found Saks, who provided the length of course and quality of training I wanted. On meeting the team, I immediately felt at home with the family environment and knew this was the place I HAD to train. My 6 month hair styling training course flew by and I found the creativity and talent I never knew I had. I qualified with a distinction and was lucky enough to be employed at the then Saks flagship salon which was situated above the Saks Academies in Covent Garden, London. Here I was able to work alongside the Saks Art Team on a daily basis both in salon and out at photo shoots and seminars. My progression was faster than I could have ever hoped for thanks to my continual training and a LOT of hard work on my part. Within the year, I moved to Saks St Paul's, London and was promoted to the top stylist in the salon with a fully booked clientele.

My five year goal of being part of the Saks Art Team was now a realistic one. 6 years have passed now since I qualified with the Saks Academies. I have been part of the Saks Art Team for 2 years and I now teach and have helped to re-write my old course for continual progression. I head up teams at photo shoots, attend London and Paris fashion weeks, guest teach for Saks at L'Oreal and travel the world spreading the principles of Saks to an ever increasing following.

I completed my hairdressing NVQ Level 2 with Saks earlier this year, and enjoyed every minute of it. The course fit into my busy lifestyle as my classes were on Saturdays, meaning I could continue working my full time job as an office manager. I soon found myself wishing I was there full time as I enjoyed being on the salon floor so much. The class was small enough to ensure 1 to 1 student/teacher time, but big enough to create a fun and lively atmosphere. Everyone was friendly and we really bonded as a group and would help each other and I found that helping coach my peers improved my own learning. If you’re looking for a career change I would recommend it to anyone!

Peta Deyell

I recently undertook a career change involving a stay of 7 months away from my family and home in Shetland; a daunting thought! I fancied pursuing a trade I had dabbled with for years but had no formal training in. I researched my options and knowing the calibre of the Saks brand I enquired about the SVQ Level 2 hairdressing course with their Academy in Glasgow. I was met with great encouragement from their management, it was confirmation that I really wanted to get started and get on. I discussed it with my family as I knew that commitment was required by everyone for me to achieve this dream and I was overwhelmed with the support they gave me and I was delighted to be accepted onto the course.

The course content was excellent and the educators were passionate about their trade. This transferred to their delivery of the course and they brought out the best in you as a student, encouraging you to stretch your abilities to achieve a high standard of service. They also stand back and let you put your new knowledge to the test, but are there should you feel the need for reassurance or advice. I felt valued by staff and the amazing clients I met along the journey to qualification and now feel confident enough to work independently in the industry. I was very humbled to achieve a VTCT Certificate of Excellence in addition to my qualification and I couldn’t have achieved it without the enthusiasm of the teaching staff in the academy, they too should be recognised as their excellence in teaching has made me the hairdresser I am today, something I will be eternally grateful for and very proud of.

I would encourage anyone interested in achieving a hairdressing qualification to consider the Saks course, I feel like I have won the lottery as I’ve now opened my own salon and am doing something I love every day. It goes to show you can follow your dreams whatever age you are if you put your mind to it.

During my time at Saks Academies I have learnt so much and my confidence has grown immensely. The course provides a very high standard of education and training and the Saks educators are particularly motivational, always giving support and guidance. I loved it so much I have now progressed onto a Level 3 Hairdressing Course with Saks Academies to give myself the best possible start within the hairdressing industry.

Jessica Baker

My course was delivered in a friendly and professional way, small classes meant that we always had support and working on clients daily enabled me to be confident. My goal was to join the cruise ships and travel the world which I did just weeks after qualifying, I would recommend this course to anyone who is serious about a career in beauty therapy and wants to be trained to a very high standard.

I recently gained my NVQ Level 2 Hairdressing with Saks Academies and have spent the last six months working on a freelance basis both in London and Ibiza. I continue to use the invaluable course materials and equipment provided. Saks gave me the confidence and skills to set me on a great career path, I am even considering returning to Saks to learn barbering so I can expand my skill set further. The sky’s the limit!

When I came over to the UK from Brazil I got a job working as an assistant in a salon and loved it so much than I decided to become hairdresser. I came across Saks over 5 years ago who seemed young and fresh with great teachers! This hairdresser school course was really good and I was qualified within 6 months. After that I pushed my self every day to get where I wanted to be. Today I work and teach at Vidal Sassoon and I’m currently trying to break into session styling. It's crazy how a course can change the direction of your life so much.

I joined Saks Academies after deciding on a career change – from an Executive Secretary to a Hairdresser – from Malaysia to the UK. It was a whole new experience but I felt comfortable studying with Saks Academies. The educators put a great amount of time and effort into you – I was guided through everything until I really found my feet. It was hard work but worth it. I met some great people but more importantly I gained a valuable insight into the industry that I want to work in. I can honestly say I have no regrets about choosing Saks Academy! And I'm now working in-salon as a stylist so it's all paid off.

Sarah Schuck

I was looking for a beauty course that I could complete both quickly and in my own time, as I work full-time. I found the Saks hair and beauty school whilst hunting through the internet and arranged a meeting. I was blown away by the enthusiasm, professionalism and the overall feel of the course and signed up immediately and am so glad I did. The course was engaging, genuinely interesting and very relevant. To say I enjoyed every minute almost sounds unbelievable but I absolutely did. The tutors were 1st class - not only giving you the basic information but the extra things you can do which will make your treatments the best. On completion of my NVQ2 I booked straight away for my NVQ3 and have just completed that. My plans to change my career have been made possible by my training at Saks and with my home clients and working on a Saturday in a local salon I am well on my way! I would recommend Saks to anyone embarking into the world of beauty and holistic therapies.

When I first left school I didn't know what I wanted to do in terms of a career, so I decided to do a diploma in travel and tourism. After completing the first year I realised it wasn’t for me and that what I really wanted to do was beauty therapy. So once I completed my diploma I started looking at beauty courses. I wanted to qualify quickly so I looked on the internet for intense courses and found Saks Academies and their NVQ2 Beauty course which would only take me 10 weeks to complete. I booked to go and have a look around with my mum to see what it was like. As soon as I had been I knew it was what I wanted to do and I couldn't wait to start. I started in November 2011 and then went on to do my NVQ3 in March 2012.

I absolutely loved the vibe and atmosphere and thoroughly enjoyed my time there. I've benefitted so much from it and whilst still completing my NVQ3 I was offered a job at a four star spa on the weekends and then have been working there full time since finishing the course. I’m so glad I have a career that I feel so confident in and I truly love! As well as providing me with a great education in beauty, Saks has enabled me to make some lifelong friends. I would go back and do it all again in a heartbeat!
